What a bank power of attorney is
A bank power of attorney authorises an agent to operate or manage a bank account, or to complete a specific transaction such as a transfer, a loan step or a closure, on the account holder’s behalf. Banks in the UAE read this kind of power of attorney closely, because they are releasing funds or giving access to money that is not the agent’s own. A document that says only “banking matters” in general terms is routinely rejected. The bank wants its own name, the account number and the transaction the agent is being asked to carry out, written into the power of attorney itself.
What a bank power of attorney can cover
Operating an account
Deposits, withdrawals and day to day transactions within a stated limit.
A specific transfer or payment
One named transaction, signed on the account holder’s behalf.
What the document must contain
01
The bank and account, named exactly
The bank’s name and the account number, not a general reference.
02
The principal and the agent
Both named as in their passports or Emirates ID.
03
What the agent may do
Operate the account, complete a named transaction, or close it, stated specifically.
04
Any limit the principal sets
A value limit, a named recipient, or another condition.
05
Signatures
The principal’s signature, witnessed and notarised.
Why banks read this one closely
A bank power of attorney gives an agent access to money that belongs to someone else, so banks check it more carefully than most other documents. A power of attorney that does not name the bank and account is usually refused outright, and most banks will not accept one more than a few months old. We draft to the specific bank and account from the start, and tell you what that bank is likely to ask for.

What the bank checks before accepting it
Most UAE banks check the same few things before they act on a power of attorney. The bank’s own name and the account number have to appear in the document. The document is usually expected to be recent, and each bank sets its own limit on how old it can be. And the authority granted has to match the transaction the agent is asking the bank to process.
- The bank’s name and account number are stated
- The document is recent enough for that bank’s own policy
- The transaction asked for matches the authority written into the POA
Who signs, and what we check
The principal, or their own attorney where permitted
The agent, named by passport or Emirates ID
The bank’s name and the account number
The specific transaction or authority granted
Any value limit or named recipient the principal sets
Where a bank power of attorney is refused
A bank power of attorney is usually refused for one of a small number of reasons. It names “banking matters” generally instead of the bank and account. It is older than the bank’s own policy accepts. Or the transaction the agent is asking for is not clearly covered by the authority written into the document. We check these against the specific bank before you sign.
Common problems, and the fix
01
The bank and account are not named
Fix: write the bank’s name and the account number into the document.
02
The POA is older than the bank accepts
Fix: ask the bank what age limit applies, and renew if needed.
03
The transaction is not clearly covered
Fix: write the specific transaction into the scope before you sign.
04
The agent is described loosely
Fix: name the agent as in their passport or Emirates ID.
After notarisation
01
Present it at the bank
The bank checks the notarised POA against its own account records before acting.
02
Complete the transaction
The agent acts within the scope written into the document.
03
Keep a copy
Keep the notarised original and a digital copy, for the agent and for your own file.
04
Renew or revoke it as needed
Tell us before a bank’s own age limit is reached, or when the POA is no longer needed.

A different bank, a different POA
A bank power of attorney written for one bank and account does not extend to another. A second bank needs its own power of attorney, naming that account.

Send the bank and account details. We draft to what that bank expects.

Questions about bank power of attorney
Does the POA need to name a specific bank account?
Yes. Most UAE banks will not act on a power of attorney that only refers to “banking matters” in general.
How old can a bank power of attorney be?
Policies differ by bank, and many prefer a document from the last few months. We check this with you before drafting.
Can my agent withdraw any amount under this POA?
Only within any limit written into the document. We draft the limit you want before you sign.
Can I grant one if I am outside the UAE?
Yes, through our online notary public service, subject to the specific bank’s own requirements.
Can one bank power of attorney cover two accounts?
Yes, if both are named and the authority for each is written in clearly.
Can a bank power of attorney be cancelled?
Yes, at any time by the principal, and we help put the cancellation on record.
