What an affidavit is
An affidavit is a written statement of fact that you swear or affirm to be true, then sign in front of a notary public. The notary does not judge whether the facts are correct. The notary confirms your identity, witnesses your signature and records that you made the statement under oath. That is what gives an affidavit its weight, not the content, but the fact that you put your name to it in front of an officer of the court. Banks, embassies, employers, schools and government departments accept an affidavit as the client’s own written word, carrying the consequence of swearing to something false. Most affidavits in Dubai are short, a page or two, built around a single fact: a name, a loss, a relationship, a support. We draft or check the wording before you sign.
Common kinds of affidavit
Affidavit of support
A written statement supporting someone’s application, often a visa or sponsorship file.
Affidavit confirming a fact
A single fact an authority asks you to confirm in writing, under oath.
Affidavit of loss
A sworn statement that a document, such as a passport or certificate, has been lost.
What the affidavit must contain
01
Your identity
Full name as on your passport or Emirates ID.
02
The statement itself
Written in plain, factual language, no ambiguity.
03
A declaration of truth
That the statement is made knowingly and is true.
04
Date and place
Where and when you signed.
05
Your signature before the notary
Witnessed and recorded at the point of signing.
Getting the wording right
An affidavit is only as useful as its wording. The authority that asked for it usually has a specific fact in mind, a name, a date, a relationship, a loss, and the affidavit needs to say exactly that, without extra claims the signer cannot stand behind. We check what the receiving authority actually asked for before we draft or finalise the wording, so the document does its job on the first submission rather than coming back for a correction.

What it costs
| Document | Fee | What you need |
|---|---|---|
| Affidavit (general, name, support) | AED 600 | Passport or Emirates ID, a note of the fact, originals and copies |
| Drafting a new affidavit | We quote after reading the document | A note of what the affidavit must state |
Fees may vary with the document; we confirm the figure before you sign.
What to bring
Passport or Emirates ID, a note of the exact fact the affidavit must state, and any document it refers to, such as a certificate or a previous affidavit.
Affidavit
Affidavit
A general sworn statement of fact, for whatever an authority asks you to confirm.
Declaration
Statutory declaration
A written statement made under a specific legal or procedural requirement.

The wording has to match what was asked
An affidavit is read by whoever asked for it, so its wording has to answer their question exactly, not just state something true in general. We check the request before we finalise the text.
- The fact stated plainly
- No claim the signer cannot support
- Format the receiving authority accepts
Who signs, and what we check
The person making the statement
A witness, where the authority asks for one
Passport or Emirates ID, original
The document the affidavit refers to
Any earlier affidavit on the same fact
Authority to sign, for a corporate affidavit
Where an affidavit gets stuck
An affidavit is rarely refused over its content. It is refused because the wording does not match what the authority asked for, because a name is spelled differently from the passport, or because the affidavit refers to a document that was never attached. We check the request and the supporting papers before you sign, so the affidavit is accepted the first time it is submitted.
Common problems, and the fix
01
The wording does not match the request
Fix: read the authority’s letter first, draft to answer it.
02
A name is spelled differently from the passport
Fix: use the passport spelling throughout.
03
A referenced document is missing
Fix: attach the certificate or earlier affidavit it points to.
04
The affidavit states more than the signer can support
Fix: narrow the statement to what is actually known.
After notarisation
01
Submit it to the authority
The notarised affidavit goes to whoever asked for it, a bank, embassy, school or department.
02
Attach the supporting document
Where the affidavit refers to a certificate or earlier affidavit, submit both.
03
Keep a copy
Keep the notarised original and a copy for your own file.

A specific requirement, not a general statement
Some authorities do not accept a general affidavit. They ask for a declaration made under a specific rule or form.

Questions about affidavits
What is the difference between an affidavit and a declaration?
An affidavit is a general sworn statement. A declaration is usually made for a specific official purpose, often under a named requirement. See declaration services.
Can you draft the affidavit for me?
Yes. Tell us the fact it needs to state and who asked for it, and we draft the wording before you sign.
Do I need a witness as well as the notary?
Usually not. The notary witnesses your signature. Some authorities ask for an additional witness, tell us if yours does.
Can I sign online?
Yes, our online notary service covers most affidavits. Call or WhatsApp us to check yours.
What if I do not have the document the affidavit refers to?
Tell us early. We can usually word the affidavit around a missing document, or arrange a replacement first.
How long does it take?
Most affidavits are ready the same visit once the wording is agreed, subject to availability.
