What a certified true copy is
A certified true copy is a copy of a document that our in-house notary public has compared against the original and confirmed to match, word for word. The notary stamps and signs the copy, and the stamp states it is a true copy of the original. Banks, employers, universities and government offices often ask for a certified true copy instead of the original, so the original stays with you. We certify passports, utility bills, bank statements, driving licences, degrees, certificates and diplomas this way. A certified true copy is not the same as document certification, which can also cover a signature or a translation, or document verification, which checks a document is still genuine and current.

Getting the scope right
A certified true copy only confirms that the copy matches the original. It does not confirm that the original itself is still valid, and it does not certify a signature that is not already on the document. If a bank or authority asks for a document to be verified as genuine and current, that is document verification, a different service. If they ask for a signature or a translation to be checked against the original, that is document certification. Tell us what the request actually asks for and we confirm which service applies before you pay.

What decides whether a copy is accepted
An authority checks that the certified copy shows the notary’s stamp, signature and the date, and that it states the copy was compared against the original. A photocopy with no stamp is not a certified true copy, however clear it is.

Where a certified true copy gets refused
We cannot certify a copy against another copy, only against the original. We cannot certify a document that looks altered, where a page is missing, or where the original itself has expired, such as a passport past its date. If the original cannot be produced, tell us early. Some authorities accept a different route, such as a declaration, and we tell you which one.

A photocopy is just a copy. A certified true copy carries our notary’s stamp, signature and a statement that it was compared against the original.
